West Houston Church Hosts Vibrant Parade of Nations

As a diverse church with countless nationalities, the West Houston Seventh-day Adventist Church in Texas organizes an annual event to celebrate various countries with an annual Parade of Nations Sabbath. The celebration held on Aug. 31, 2024, represented more than 30 countries. Renike Surbakti, the churchโ€™s administrative assistant, has coordinated this event for five years.

The idea originated with Judy Bates (musical director at the time) and Frank Ottati (former pastor) nearly 20 years ago. Noticing the increase in the churchโ€™s diverse membership, which covers 46 nationalities, they created a special Sabbath service with flags representing each of those nations. In addition to the colorful flag parade, members wore traditional clothing from their countries and brought cultural foods to share following the service.

Diego Boquer, pastor, shared that at this special service, visitors are invited to join and represent their country, adding to the colorful and friendly ambiance. The members look forward to increasing their membership as well as the nationalities they represent.
